On Monday, flash floods swept down the mountainsides of Nuristan province in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 23 people and leaving more than 100 missing. Some 80 people were injured, and homes and shops in the provincial capital, Parun, were reduced to mud and rubble. Many houses in these remote valleys are built of mud and offered little protection when the waters came. Forecasters warn of further heavy rain and flash flooding in ten of the country's 34 provinces, and families are still digging for their loved ones. We pray for the people of Nuristan — the bereaved, the injured, and all those waiting for news of the missing — and for the rescue crews and relief workers searching the rubble.
