A week after Bangkok's governor declared all fifty of the city's districts a flood disaster zone, the water has not gone. Whole neighbourhoods have turned from rivers into stagnant lakes, with the roofs of parked cars barely showing above the surface and residents using paddling pools and, in one case, a chest freezer as boats to reach their own front doors. The government says about forty people have died in flood-related incidents, a number of them by drowning and several by accidental electrocution. Thousands remain in more than two hundred shelters. The Thai Meteorological Department warned on Saturday that heavy to very heavy rain returns to Bangkok and the surrounding provinces on Monday and Tuesday. We pray for every family still in a shelter, for those going back to a house they cannot yet live in, and for the pumping crews, engineers, soldiers and neighbours working through the water.
