On Friday, 21 August, armed men in their hundreds stormed the Borgu area of Nigeria's Niger State, attacking the villages of Dekara, Gidan Zana, Sabon Gida and Masaka as Friday prayers ended. Police say more than 40 people were killed, and residents report more than 100 taken into the forests, among them worshippers seized from the Kpenya mosque. Borgu has endured wave after wave of such raids: this month 145 abducted people were rescued there, and last November more than 200 schoolchildren were taken nearby. Each raid leaves families waiting without word for those they love. We pray for the taken and for those who wait for them, for the bereaved, and for the rescuers searching the forests — that every captive may come safely home.
