Brian Jackson was visiting a friend at an apartment complex in Riverside, California, when rechargeable batteries caught fire and exploded. As smoke filled the building he saw a pregnant woman at a window, preparing to jump. He told her he would climb down first and help her down, and as he lowered himself a second explosion threw him to the ground. Jackson is recovering from emergency surgery at Riverside Community Hospital and may lose both legs. His stepdaughter said the first thing he asked when he woke was whether the mother and her baby were all right. They are. He faces a long recovery and months of physical therapy.
