Congo began vaccinating health workers against Ebola on Saturday in Bunia, the epicentre of what the World Health Organization calls the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease in history. Government figures recorded 7,541 confirmed cases and 3,639 deaths since the epidemic was declared in May, with 1,823 people recovered. The campaign in Ituri and North Kivu aims to reach 20,000 front-line workers over six to nine months. The Bundibugyo strain driving this outbreak has no licensed vaccine or treatment, and the response is hampered by insecurity, displacement and population movement. Behind those figures are burial teams in protective suits, nurses who cannot go home, and families kept apart. We pray for every person now ill and for those recovering, and for the doctors, nurses, vaccinators and burial teams of Ituri. May the chain of infection be broken and the province come back to health.
