Captain Smit Machchhar was flying flydubai flight 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday with 174 people on board when his co-pilot stabbed him and tried to bring the Boeing 737 Max 8 down. Wounded, Machchhar opened the cockpit door so passengers and crew could overpower the attacker. An off-duty flight crew member travelling in the cabin then stabilised the aircraft and landed it safely at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. Machchhar, an Indian national with about fifteen years of flying behind him, has undergone surgery and is in a stable condition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he saved 174 lives. No passengers were hurt; two crew members were taken to hospital. We pray for Captain Machchhar in his recovery, for the surgeons and nurses caring for him, and for the other crew member in hospital beside him.
