On Friday morning, a landslide tore down a hillside in Pengshui County, on the outskirts of Chongqing in southwestern China, burying riverside homes along the Wujiang river. At least eight people have died and 34 remain missing. A community worker spotted falling rocks and raised the alarm, but the slope collapsed as more than 1,100 residents were being evacuated. Whole families now wait beside the rubble for news of the missing, while nine survivors have already been pulled from the debris alive. Hundreds of rescuers and firefighters are searching around the clock. We pray for those trapped beneath the earth and the families who wait for them, for the bereaved, and for every rescuer digging through the night — that lives may yet be saved and hope restored to Pengshui.
