A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, centred near the village of San José del Palmar in Chocó province. At least 111 people were killed — local reports say more than 130 — and over 480 injured. The city of Pereira, in the coffee-growing region, was hardest hit, with dozens of buildings collapsed; Cali and Manizales also suffered heavy damage. People remain trapped beneath the rubble, and rescue teams and neighbours are digging through broken concrete by hand as families wait through the night for news of those they love. We pray for the injured, the bereaved and those still trapped, and for the rescuers, doctors and volunteers labouring to save them.
