A mountain of refuse collapsed at the Dar es Salam landfill in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, at around 2am on Sunday after heavy overnight rain. At least 30 people were killed and 22 injured, six of them seriously, as the landslide buried homes built beside the dump. One woman told local media that five of her children died. Soldiers and rescue crews with excavators are still searching. Those who live and work at the landfill are among the poorest in the city, and the search for the missing continues in the rain. We pray for every family digging through that hillside for someone they love, for the injured in Conakry's hospitals, and for the soldiers, rescuers and doctors working without rest. May the missing be found and may these families be housed in safety.
