The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the nation's history. Since May, 2,325 people have died among 4,945 confirmed cases of the rare Bundibugyo strain, surpassing the toll of the 2018–2020 epidemic. The virus has spread to six eastern provinces, and the World Health Organization calls its pace exceptional. In Ituri province, the epicentre, some families have lost as many as fifteen relatives. There is no approved vaccine yet, though trials are under way, and more than a thousand people have already recovered. We pray for the sick and those in isolation, for the grieving families, and for the doctors, nurses and community health workers who labour on through every hardship. May healing spread faster than the disease, and may hope return to eastern Congo.
