The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has become the second-worst in history. Official figures released Thursday show 1,521 deaths and 3,442 cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15 — a 50% rise in about a week. The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment, and cases have reached five provinces, with nearly 90% in remote Ituri. This is the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak ever recorded, and it is outpacing the response. It is striking communities already burdened by conflict, displacement and hunger, and violence and mistrust are hindering the health workers trying to contain it. We pray for the sick, the bereaved and the frightened, and for the doctors, nurses and contact tracers risking their lives to save others. Neighbouring Uganda has just declared itself free of Ebola — proof this disease can be beaten. May healing and hope soon reach Congo.
