A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores island in eastern Indonesia before dawn on Saturday, 15 August. Buildings and homes collapsed in Maumere, the island's main town, where falling concrete struck ferry passengers at the port. At least one person has died and several are injured, and a tsunami warning sent coastal families fleeing inland before it was lifted. The region is remote and mountainous, and the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Many families face the coming nights beside damaged homes, shaken by aftershocks. We pray for the people of Flores — for the bereaved, the injured and the fearful — and for the search and rescue teams already at work.
