A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Flores on August 15, the nation's deadliest in four years. At least 70 people have died, nearly 1,200 are injured, and some 40,000 have been driven from their homes, while hundreds of aftershocks continue to shake East Nusa Tenggara province. Landslides have cut the roads to remote villages, and medical supplies are running low. In one health centre a single doctor has been tending hundreds of patients, while families sleep outdoors, waiting for aid to reach them. We pray for the people of Flores — for the bereaved, the injured, and all who wait beneath makeshift shelters — and for the rescuers, doctors, and relief workers hastening to reach them.
