Two buses carrying graduates from Ibadan to their National Youth Service Corps orientation camps were ambushed at Umunoha, on the Owerri-Onitsha expressway in Imo State, in south-east Nigeria, on 1 October. Troops rescued ten passengers within a day. The rest were taken into the bush. Vanguard puts the number still held at twenty; reports of the ransom demand say nineteen. None has been freed. Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso said a drone has located the camp, but that the ground around it is "heavily mined with Improvised Explosive Devices". Armoured vehicles are being brought up rather than a rushed raid. Janet Oladosu, 55, in Ibadan, had a text from her son Greatness: "Mummy, I hid this phone in my trouser to send a text to you." We pray for Greatness and every young person held with him, for the officers who must go in, and for the families waiting beside their telephones.
