Three Greek firefighters died on Wednesday battling wildfires fanned by gale-force winds. In western Crete, two firefighters were trapped when flames swept through the mountain village of Krya Vrysi, in the Rethymno region; a third died near the port town of Gytheio in the Peloponnese. With fire fronts stretching as far as 15 kilometres, residents and tourists were evacuated from several villages, and new fires broke out on Paros, Lesbos and the mainland. These firefighters gave their lives protecting others at the height of Europe's fiercest fire season, and thousands of Greek families now wait anxiously as crews fight on through heat and wind. We pray for the families of the fallen, for everyone driven from their homes, and for the firefighters, pilots and volunteers still on the fire lines — that the winds may calm, the flames subside, and Greece's villages be kept safe.
