The Fuego volcano, one of Central America's most active, began erupting on Monday morning, sending lava and pyroclastic flows down its slopes and clouds of ash over southern Guatemala. Disaster officials evacuated 659 people from eight villages in the danger zone, with around ten more communities expected to follow. A major highway was closed and schools in nearby towns suspended classes. For the farming families who live on the volcano's fertile slopes, the fear is deeply personal: an eruption of Fuego in June 2018 killed hundreds of people and buried an entire village.
