The blaze began on the vehicle deck in waters off Sumenep, near Madura island, and spread within minutes. Passengers in life jackets crowded the bow as smoke engulfed the ship; some leapt into the sea. Nearby vessels rescued 227 people, but at least five died and around 40 remain missing. Tonight, families in two port cities wait by the water for news, while rough seas and high waves hamper the search.
