Anak Krakatau, the volcano that rose from the ruins of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has been erupting since late Friday night. Indonesia's geological agency recorded ash columns of 6,000 metres on the Java side and up to 15,000 metres on the Sumatra side. Ash reached Jakarta and Lampung; Soekarno-Hatta, the country's busiest airport, suspended all flights on Sunday morning, affecting 209 flights. No casualties have been reported and the disaster agency says there is no imminent tsunami risk, but schools cancelled activities, residents suffered eye irritation and fishermen stayed ashore. Every family on these coasts remembers the 2018 collapse of this same volcano, whose tsunami killed more than 400 people. We pray for the villages of Banten and Lampung, for the travellers stranded and the children breathing ash, and for the volcanologists and disaster crews keeping watch. May the mountain grow quiet.
