Hurricane Lowell, a major Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds, is turning north toward the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and Niihau, where a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch are in force. Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency. The National Hurricane Center expects the eye to pass to the west late on Monday, but forecasts 6 to 10 inches of rain on Kauai with up to 14 inches in places, 4 to 8 inches on the Big Island, storm surge of up to three feet, and significant flash flooding and mudslides. Hawaii is still clearing the mud of Hurricane Lala and Tropical Storm Moke, which struck within days of each other three weeks ago and did more than $43 million of damage to the Big Island's roads and homes. Lowell is the third storm in a month. We pray that Lowell keeps to the open sea, that the rains fall gently, and that every family on Kauai and the Big Island wakes to calm skies. We pray too for the forecasters, emergency crews, shelter volunteers and linemen who are working through the night.
