Hurricane Polo grew from a 50mph tropical storm into a category five hurricane in a single day off Mexico's south-west coast. A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft recorded sustained winds near 180mph on Tuesday, and the National Hurricane Center called the storm "extremely dangerous". Forecasters expect Polo to skirt the coast without making landfall, but warn of up to eight inches of rain, deadly flooding and mudslides, and life-threatening surf for several days. President Claudia Sheinbaum has asked residents along the Pacific coast to stay vigilant, naming Jalisco, Colima and Michoacan as the states most at risk.
