On Friday, 21 August, a military fighter jet dropped two bombs on the monastery compound of Swel Le Oh village in Myanmar's Sagaing region, where more than 100 people were keeping a weeklong meditation retreat for Buddhist Lent. Fourteen people were killed, among them three women, and twenty were wounded, according to a local defence organisation and villagers. People had gathered in the quietest of places — a village monastery, in a week set aside for prayer. Survivors cremated their dead and fled to a neighbouring community. We pray for the families of Swel Le Oh and all of Sagaing, for those who tend the wounded and shelter the displaced, and for all who labour for peace in Myanmar — may quiet and safety return to its villages.
