Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, is being held in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad, in north-east Iran. The Guardian reports she has been sentenced to death on a charge of insulting the prophet over a social media post, and separately to more than twelve years on charges including acting against national security and spreading propaganda. She was arrested during January's nationwide protests, after which rights groups say more than fifty thousand people were detained. Her defence argued the remarks were not deliberate. The death sentence is not final and remains subject to appeal before Iran's supreme court. In an audio recording released from prison last month and attributed to her, Amini said: "I am an innocent young girl with so many hopes and dreams. I have parents who are waiting for me." We pray for Najmeh Amini in her cell, for her mother and father, for all those held beside her for something they wrote or said, and for the lawyers and rights workers carrying her case.
