On Wednesday a wall of mud and water, released by a glacial collapse high in Tibet, swept through the valleys of the Nepal-China border. Nepali police report at least 162 people killed, with more than 550 missing in Tibet and hundreds more in Nepal - among them pilgrims bound for Mount Kailash and travellers from India, the United States, Britain, Australia and Canada. In Nuwakot district, whole bazaars were buried within half an hour. Families across many nations now wait beside phones and hospital doors in Kathmandu, while survivors, caked in mud, search for their neighbours in the wreckage of their villages. We pray for the people of these mountain valleys and for every family waiting for news; for the rescuers digging by hand and the helicopter pilots carrying survivors to safety. May the missing be found, and may the valleys know peace again.
