A week after catastrophic flash floods tore through the Nepal-China border region, the death toll has passed 1,000, and more than 3,900 people are still missing. The army says 119 people have been rescued by air. In Chitwan district, authorities have begun temporary burials of unidentified victims, while displaced families shelter in schools in Nuwakot district and rescuers search a dozen hydropower sites for trapped workers. Behind every number is a family waiting at a riverbank for news. Survivors describe whole villages buried in mud, their homes and fields swept away in minutes. We pray for the souls who were lost, for the missing and those who wait for them, and for the soldiers, pilots and relief workers still searching.
