On Sunday, August 16, U.S. envoy Jared Kushner met Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt — the first talks at this level since the ceasefire — in an effort to save the 15-point road map for peace in Gaza. He meets Israel's prime minister on Monday. At stake are the lives of two million people in a territory where more than 73,000 have been killed and 1.9 million — nine in ten — remain displaced. After more than ten months of fragile ceasefire, these talks may decide whether families can finally return, rebuild their homes, and live without fear. We pray for the people of Gaza and for all peoples of the region; for the negotiators and mediators gathered at the table, that they may be inspired to choose peace; and for the day when children play again by Gaza's harbour.
