On Saturday night a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Andes region of Peru, its epicentre just west of Sicaya in Huancayo province. At least six people were killed, more than thirty injured and some three hundred displaced as adobe homes collapsed in farming villages such as Chongos Bajo and Pumpuya. The number of missing is not yet known. In these high mountain communities, many families built their homes by hand from earthen brick. In a single minute, generations of shelter and memory fell — and the nights in the Andes are cold. We pray for the bereaved, the injured and the newly homeless of Huancayo, and for the rescuers, volunteers and relief workers searching the rubble and sheltering the displaced. May comfort find every family, and may these villages rise again in hope.
