On Monday evening a tornado tore through Pomas, a village of about a thousand people in the Aude, south-west France. Around forty people were injured, fifteen of them taken to hospital, including a pregnant woman whose house collapsed around her. Some three hundred homes were damaged, and about 2,800 households across ten villages were left without power. More than 120 firefighters and emergency workers hurried to the village, and shelters have been opened for those whose homes are unsafe. For a small community, the loss of roofs, trees and familiar streets is deeply felt. We pray for the injured and the shaken, and for the firefighters, medics and neighbours clearing the streets - that Pomas may be rebuilt, and its people rest safe again.
