A fast-moving wildfire reached the edge of Reno, Nevada on Sunday, destroying homes in the northwest of the city. The Hawk Fire began on Saturday and grew to more than 23 square miles across the Peavine Peak area, uncontained. Some 42,000 residents were ordered to evacuate and another 45,000 were placed on warning, with at least six people injured, three of them first responders. Families fled with minutes to spare, and some returned to find nothing left. Shifting winds have made the fire unpredictable, and thousands have been told to expect to stay away from their homes for days. We pray for every family who has lost a home or is waiting in a shelter tonight, for the injured, and for the firefighters and deputies working through the smoke. May the fire be stilled, may every person be accounted for, and may this city be rebuilt in strength and kindness.
