Six million people in Somalia — around a third of the country — are facing acute food insecurity, the World Food Programme warned on 20 August. The agency now has only a tenth of the resources it had in 2022, when it helped avert famine. This year 1.9 million children under five are projected to suffer acute malnutrition, including nearly 500,000 who will need urgent treatment. Behind every number is a family. At one Mogadishu nutrition centre, a pregnant mother of six walked two miles carrying her malnourished child, having not eaten for two days herself. We pray for the mothers, fathers and children of Somalia, and for the health workers, aid agencies and generous nations striving to reach them.
