At least thirty-six humanitarian workers and contractors have been killed in South Sudan since January — already more than in all of last year, the United Nations said on World Humanitarian Day. More than 450 violent incidents against aid workers and their supplies were recorded between January and July, over double last year's pace. Around ten million people in South Sudan need humanitarian assistance this year, and more than 7.5 million face acute hunger. The workers who reach them — most of them South Sudanese — carry food and medicine through danger every day. We pray for the aid workers of South Sudan and the families of those who have fallen, and for all whose survival depends on the help they bring. May the helpers be protected, and may relief flow freely to every family in need.
