Fires have burned across Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo since mid-July, and their smoke now blankets large parts of Southeast Asia. Indonesia's Health Ministry recorded more than 50,000 respiratory infections linked to the fires between July and August - over 12,000 of them in children under five. Air quality in Malaysia's Sarawak state reached hazardous levels again this week, and Malaysia began cloud-seeding flights on Thursday to try to bring rain. In the smoke, children cough through their lessons, parents seal their windows, and millions breathe air many times above safe limits. We pray for every child struggling to breathe, for families living beneath darkened skies, and for the firefighters, health workers and pilots seeding the clouds - may rain fall, the skies clear, and clean air return to every home.
