Bangkok's governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, declared all fifty districts of Thailand's capital a flood disaster zone on Saturday after nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in forty-eight hours. Major roads went under, cars sat half submerged, and people waded home through water at waist height. More than two hundred shelters have been opened and about 4,200 people have moved into them, with schools turned into temporary accommodation and the army setting up field kitchens. No deaths have been reported, but the canals that drain the city are full, more rain is forecast through the week, and those living closest to the water have been told to carry what they own upstairs. We pray for every family now sleeping in a shelter or watching the water climb at their door, and for the pumping crews, the soldiers and the volunteers working through the rain. May the canals hold, may the water draw away, and may the city come back to itself.
