At the UN General Assembly last week American and Iranian negotiators met for three hours, and Iran proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and restarting nuclear talks in return for the lifting of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. On Friday President Trump rejected it: "They made a proposal but I reject it." On Sunday the US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, said Iran had not been negotiating in good faith. Both sides have left the door open. Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said "we have never closed the door to diplomacy or negotiations", and President Masoud Pezeshkian said after meeting the UN Secretary-General that Iran has not walked away from the negotiating table. Mr Trump expects talks to resume this week. We pray for the negotiators on both sides, and for the mediators carrying messages between them.
