More than a thousand people in Dona Ana County, southern New Mexico, have been ordered from their homes after the McLeod Dam was pushed to the brink of failing on Tuesday. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency because of the dam, and county crews are running pumps to move water downstream and take the pressure off the wall. The rain came from the remnants of Hurricane Polo. More than sixty flash floods were reported across the Southwest in two days, with rain falling at up to four inches an hour. As of this morning the wall is still standing and the outcome is not yet known. We pray for every family that left a house last night not knowing what they will find, for the engineers at the pumps and the crews pulling drivers out of flooded roads, and for the towns from El Paso to the Texas plains still waiting under this rain.
