Nepal suspended its search and rescue operations on Monday 5 October, six weeks after a glacial collapse on the Nepal-China border sent a torrent of mud, rock and water down the Trishuli valley on 26 August. Phanindra Paudel of the National Emergency Operation Centre said the country is moving from the search-and-rescue phase to the search-and-rehabilitation phase. At least 1,455 people are confirmed dead, 13,795 were rescued, and 5,285 are still missing. Families will now be asked to have the missing legally declared dead so that insurance and banking can proceed. A council chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah has recommended a reconstruction budget of 559 billion rupees, and four glacial lakes are to be drained over the coming years. We pray for every family still waiting for news, for those in the shelters above the valley, and for the teams who searched the silt for six weeks.
