A rescue plane spotted a small boat drifting 120 kilometres south of Gran Canaria on Wednesday afternoon. Forty-four men and boys were brought safely into the port of Arguineguin early Thursday; three were airlifted to hospital in critical condition. The boat had left The Gambia in early August with around 127 people aboard, and more than eighty are feared to have died during a month adrift on the Atlantic. Behind each number is a family on a distant shore still waiting for word, and survivors who reached land too weak to stand. We pray for the survivors' healing, for the souls of those lost at sea, and for the rescuers, Red Cross workers, doctors and nurses now caring for them - may every survivor recover fully, and may hope and protection surround all who remain in peril on the sea.
