On Wednesday morning a fire, started by an exploding air conditioner, swept through a third-floor nursery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. Fourteen newborn babies died; one child of the fifteen in the nursery was carried to safety. Rescue workers climbed ladders to reach the ward through broken windows as parents gathered below. These were children only days old, and their parents leave the hospital with empty arms. A whole nation has been moved to grief, and an investigation has begun. We pray for the mothers and fathers of Islamabad, for the nurses who cradled the rescued child, and for the doctors who fought to save the rest. May every grieving family be surrounded by comfort, and may every nursery become a place of safety.
