Two boats carrying more than 500 people, most of them Rohingya refugees, are feared to have capsized in the Bay of Bengal, United Nations agencies said Thursday. The vessels left Myanmar's Rakhine State in late June — one, carrying around 250 people, lost contact shortly after departure; the second, with about 280 aboard, is believed to have sunk off the Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. Many of those aboard had fled overcrowded refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, crossing during the monsoon season, when the sea is at its most dangerous. Nearly 300 people had already been reported dead or missing on this route this year. We pray for the families waiting for news, for the rescuers searching the waters, and for the 1.2 million Rohingya still living in the camps — that safety, refuge and hope may find them.
