Hurricane Simon has not come ashore. At 3am on Sunday the National Hurricane Center placed its eyewall very near the coast of west-central Mexico, about sixty miles west-south-west of Manzanillo, with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles an hour and a central pressure of 930 millibars. It is tracking north-north-west at 6 miles an hour, roughly parallel to the shore. The forecaster wrote that it is "simply too close to call whether landfall will occur". That is why we pray now. A hurricane warning runs from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and over Las Islas Marias. Forecasters expect a further 10 to 20 inches of rain, with isolated totals near 30 inches in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, life-threatening flooding and mudslides on steep ground, and a dangerous storm surge with destructive waves. We send the Light to the storm itself, that it may be turned out to open water and come apart far from any shore, and we pray for the coast to be held safe from the surge.
