More than 100 wildfires are burning across Canada, the fiercest in northern Ontario, where the community of Collins — home of the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation — was destroyed and residents fled across the lake by boat with only minutes of warning. Smoke has made Toronto's air quality the worst in the world amid record heat, with warnings stretching from Minnesota to New York and thousands of campers evacuated from the Boundary Waters wilderness. Mercifully, no deaths have been reported. But families have lost their homes, and millions of people — the elderly, the very young and the unwell most of all — are breathing dangerous air. We pray for all who have fled the flames and all who wait beneath the smoke, and for the firefighters, rangers and volunteers labouring to bring them safely through — may the skies clear, and may every family come home to rebuild.
