More than 220,000 people have been ordered to flee wildfires sweeping across France and Spain. Near Bordeaux, a blaze officials call an "XXL fire" has burned 19,000 hectares of forest and destroyed dozens of homes, and hundreds escaped the Cap Ferret peninsula by boat. West of Madrid, three fires merged into a single front that emergency chiefs say is beyond their capacity to contain — the worst fire in the region's history. Spain has declared a national emergency. Families are sheltering in sports halls, elderly residents have been carried from nursing homes, and children have been evacuated from summer camps. Around fifty firefighters have already been injured battling the flames. We pray for every family that fled with only what they could carry, for the firefighters and pilots holding the line, for the volunteers opening their doors to strangers — and for cooling winds, quenching rain, and safe homecomings.
